Why mentor?

  • Provide stability

Many teens in foster care lack consistent adults in their lives; mentors offer dependable guidance and support.

  • Build life skills

Mentors help teens learn practical skills like budgeting, goal setting, and decision-making that prepare them for independence.

  • Offer hope and encouragement

A caring voice can remind young people that their future is full of possibility and worth investing in.

  • Create belonging

Mentors help teens feel seen, valued, and connected, countering the isolation that often comes with foster care.

  • Model healthy relationships

Teens can learn what trust, respect, and encouragement look like in practice.

  • Change the trajectory

A mentor’s influence can open doors to education, jobs, and community, breaking cycles of instability.

 FAQs

  • Mentors can be adults (age 28+) who are dependable, compassionate, and committed to walking alongside a young person in foster care or aging out of foster care. No special degree or background is required—just a willingness to listen, encourage, and show up consistently.

  • We ask mentors to commit to at least one year of mentorship. On average, this looks like meeting or connecting bi-weekly(in person or virtually) and checking in regularly by phone or text.

  • Mentoring is about being a consistent support and guide. It might look like school support, helping with job applications, celebrating birthdays, talking through challenges, or just being a safe person to call.

  • Yes, we provide mentor orientation and ongoing training so you feel equipped to support your mentee. You’ll also have ongoing access to our staff for guidance and encouragement.

  • You won’t be alone. Our Mentor Program Director checks in regularly with both mentors and mentees. We also host mentor meetups and provide resources so you always feel supported.
